About DGS

Denver Green School - Southeast is a K-8 program in the Virginia Vale neighborhood. We are proud of our "hands-on, brains-on" approach to learning where students get outside the classroom and bring learning to life and how our students have demonstrated their learning. For the past ten years, we have received a “Green” Performance Rating on the State Performance Framework. In 2022, Denver Green School - Southeast was named a Whole Child Distinguished School for providing equitable and inclusive environments where students are healthy, supported, engaged, challenged, safe, and socially and emotionally intelligent.

Here are some highlights of what students experience:

  • On-sight farm run by Sprout City farms that provides opportunities for students to get their hands dirty while learning about local food production.

  • An excursion program to get schools out in the community to learn. Just this year, students at various grades have gone to the symphony, Red Rocks, the library, grocery stores, and various museums.

  • Challenge programming made possible by having double the staff time normally allocated to Gifted and Talented programming in DPS. See more details here.

  • Personalized instructional time is provided for 45 minutes daily four times a week. A team of specialists work with a single grade level to provide focused instruction for all students. We maintain a full time reading interventionist and math interventionist, as well as special education and multilingual education teachers.

  • Rigorous curriculum, including two reading programs that reflect science of reading: CKLA for reading comprehension and Orton-Gillingham for foundational reading skills. In math, we are leading the district in implementing a problem based curriculum in K-5. Additionally, each grade works to integrate themes of sustainability through literacy, science, and social studies programming.

  • Transitional Native Language Programming will be offered in elementary grades starting in the fall of 2025. This means that Spanish speaking licensed staff will support students towards a goal of biliteracy. This option is available for families of students who speak Spanish at home.

Please note that you must first fill out a choice application, and when it’s time for registration, you will be notified.
